A Rainbow of Color: The Connection Between Germantown, Pennsylvania and Navajo Weavings
Monday-Saturday, 9 a.m.-6 p.m.; Sunday, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. The Heritage Center of Lancaster County is pleased to announce a Navajo weaving exhibition titled Rainbow Yarn: Navajo Rugs, Germantown Yarns and the Pennsylvania Connection at the Lancaster Quilt and Textile Museum in downtown Lancaster, Pennsylvania. This exciting exhibition, guest curated by nationally recognized scholar and dealer Brant Mackley, will focus on the history and influence of the wool yarn produced in the Germantown section of Philadelphia upon Navajo weavings. Featuring more than 40 weavings and a host of other objects including comparative materials, the exhibition will chronicle how these brilliantly colored, tightly bound Germantown yarns were introduced by traders to Navajo weavers in the American southwest. A color catalog of the exhibition, authored by several scholars, will be available.
This exhibition has been underwritten through the generosity of Irene N. Wash. The catalog is being supported, in part, by funding from Caldwell, Heckles and Egan and others.
School groups with advance reservations are free. Special rates are available for tour groups through preregistration.
Tickets: Adults, $6. Children 17 and under are free. Location: 37 N. Market St. Contact: 717-299-6440 Details: [webpage]

AirPlay, the newest traveling exhibit to arrive at the North Museum, provides the tools to explore the nature of air—how it moves and influences our environment. You’ll have the opportunity to paint a wall of fluttering “shimmer disks” with a spray of air, or race balls through different paths to see the effects of turbulence. Demuth's Destinations - The Demuth Museum
An opening reception will be held on Friday, July 3, 2009 from 5-7 p.m. in conjunction with First Friday festivities. Demuth’s Destinations will explore the artist’s travels in the United States and abroad in relation to his ground breaking Modernist art. Following his study at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, Charles Demuth (1883-1935) made his permanent residence and studio in his family home in Lancaster, creating the vast majority of his art there. Yet the artist led a peripatetic lifestyle, traveling regularly to Philadelphia, New York and Provincetown. Demuth also made several trips to Europe throughout his life, including stays in Paris, London and Berlin.
This exhibition of works from the Museum’s permanent collection of Demuth’s art will examine the relationship between Demuth’s travels to these distinct cosmopolitan centers and his artwork. While his travels informed his art, Demuth did not typically create artworks while away from Lancaster. Rather, he participated in an international community of avant garde artists, writers and intellectuals. He took in the work of his European and American contemporaries and exhibited his own art in a variety of venues. Demuth’s local destinations will also be examined in the exhibition which will be accompanied by a walking tour guide and map to sites and structures in Lancaster that inspired his art.
Regular Museum Hours: Tuesday – Saturday, 10-4 & Sunday, 1-4. Closed, Saturday, July 4, for the Independence Day Holiday.

Hello Dolly!
Fulton Theatre opens its 2009-10 Season with one of America’s most beloved musicals. When the irrepressible matchmaker Dolly Gallagher Levi is hired to arrange a marriage for the miserly half-a-millionaire Horace Vandergelder, she finds him the perfect mate—herself! But first she must rejoin the race of life she stopped running when she was widowed and win the heart of her unsuspecting “husband to be” before he gets hitched to somebody else. Filled with elaborate turn-of-the-20th century costumes, charged with high-energy choreography and positively brimming with joyful tunes including “Put On Your Sunday Clothes,” “It Only Takes a Moment” and the irresistible title song, Hello, Dolly! is a delectable treat for audiences of all ages.
